The year in motoring safety

It was around this time last year that I wrote this piece on motor vehicle safety.

Coming into the festive season, I wanted to explore how and why we continue to die on our roads despite the fact that our roads, cars, and safety awareness are better than ever.

So it’s timely that, earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending the ANCAP safety authority end-of-year celebration.

Are you still craving a few extra handfuls of fresh, festive-season cherries?

Did you know you can save yourself the drive to Young, and pick your own cherries right here in Canberra?

But you’ll need to hurry …

Akiba, Canberra City, Canberra, Australia

It’s been exactly three years since Akiba Canberra turned on the neon signs and opened its doors, but in a city where both menus and venues seem to change with the seasons, this busy little eatery is still going strong.

I’m no stranger to Akiba Canberra – it’s a regular favourite to visit with friends and work colleagues alike. As many of us tend to do, however, I’d developed a routine of sticking to ordering the dishes I know and love.

So the chance to formally review the restaurant earlier this month also afforded an opportunity to place myself in the chef’s hands and step outside my comfort zone.

Canberra’s Cameron Hill aiming to wrap up season with success in Newcastle

Canberra driver Cameron Hill will be lining up for the final Toyota 86 Race Series race at the Newcastle 500 this weekend, aiming for a positive finish to a year that’s had plenty of ups and downs.
The Toyota 86 Race Series is in only its second year, but has already attracted both a strong fan base and a number of promising young drivers, including Number 111 Cameron Hill.
While the series visits tracks across Australia and New Zealand, it has strong roots in Canberra – local icon Neal Bates’ motorsports team has been involved in the development of the series from its start.

Just how far can a stock-standard 4WD take you?

Just how far can a stock-standard Ford Everest 4WD take you? Ford took me to Tasmania to test my (very basic) off-road driving skills and find out.

THERE’S ALWAYS THAT defining moment in any adventure. As I stood beside a rocky, slippery creek bed, looking at the winding gravel track ahead, I thought, that’s not so bad. I can do this, I thought.

Until I realised it was that creek bed we’d be driving up, not the track.

Little National Hotel, Barton, Canberra, Australia

While much of the international attention on Canberra recently has focused on the revitalised district of Braddon near the city’s centre, smart travellers won’t overlook the urban suburb of Barton, where you can stay and play in peace and comfort.

Barton is located less than 10 minutes’ drive from Canberra International Airport and around 7 minutes’ drive from the city centre.

During the week, Barton is a hub for business travellers and office workers from the surrounding buildings, a feature that helps maintain its profile as a particularly clean and safe location (in what is generally a very clean and safe city).

Best restaurants and cafes in Canberra for cage-free eggs

More of us than ever before are buying cage-free eggs in the supermarket, but what about when we eat out? If you’re eating out for breakfast this weekend, make sure you’ve got the good eggs!

As on many other topics, the ACT is a leader in the animal welfare space. To date, we remain the only jurisdiction that’s banned the use of cruel battery cages, as well as restrictive sow stalls for farmed pigs.

Those might seem like easy decisions, given there was only one battery cage facility in Canberra (which has since converted to cage-free).

In fact, it should be a straightforward decision for most states and territories, given that battery cages have been (or are being) phased out in most developed countries and regions around the world – the EU, UK, Canada, New Zealand, and several US states to name just a few.
