What’s your worst Canberra road rage experience?

It’s been a while since I’ve encountered a real example of road rage, and it got me thinking – when has this happened to you?

The other evening I was driving home, after a trip to the chemist no less, to pick up all the drugs to treat my first decent flu of the season.

Turning left out of the main street of Queanbeyan – diagonally opposite the police station – I had a red turn light that remained while the main light was green.

This was not good news for the person in the large white dual-cab ute behind me, who was clearly very important and in a serious rush.

Most of us like to think we’re pretty slick on the roads, but there’s plenty of evidence out there to suggest quite a few of us are wrong.

You can’t control what others do on the road, but you can absolutely control what happens inside the cabin of your own vehicle.

Learning some more advanced driving techniques can not only help ensure a safer and more comfortable journey – it’s actually a lot of fun to test and challenge your skills.

A simple guide to in-car etiquette: Part Two.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about good in-car etiquette for passengers – not messing with the controls, taking your rubbish with you when you go, and so forth.

But it’s just as important for drivers to be aware of how their behaviour impacts upon their passengers. A lot of talk about being a considerate driver focuses on courtesy toward those outside the car – but what about those inside?

What are Canberra’s most annoying driving habits?

Oooh, here we go …

Look, I think Canberra’s reputation for bad driving is undeserved (although there seems to be no shortage of people on my daily commute who are desperate to prove me wrong).

Sadly, the facts don’t back me up either. While we have one of the lowest road tolls in Australia – due in no small part to our smaller population – we have above average numbers of speeding and drink driving offences as well as more admissions to hospital for motor vehicle accidents.

And there’s even anecdotal evidence we pay higher insurance premiums as a result. Yikes.

So while I’d love to wax lyrical about all the ways in which Canberrans are skilled, courteous and safe drivers (and I’m sure many of us are) … isn’t it much more fun to talk about our bad driving habits?

Flashers, truckers, and the code of the road

I’ve always been fascinated by the secret codes motorists use to communicate with each other.
It’s like our own little language, or ‘code of the road’. Rarely taught, but generally picked up along the way.

From a very young age, like many of us, I watched as the driving adults in my family gave the all-important wave to acknowledge and thank those who showed courtesy on the road.
