Flashers, truckers, and the code of the road

I’ve always been fascinated by the secret codes motorists use to communicate with each other.
It’s like our own little language, or ‘code of the road’. Rarely taught, but generally picked up along the way.

From a very young age, like many of us, I watched as the driving adults in my family gave the all-important wave to acknowledge and thank those who showed courtesy on the road.

Choosing the right car for you ... and why emotions matter.

With what seems to be an ever-increasing array of choices in the new car market, how do you actually make a decision? Jane Speechley wants to talk about emotions.

Okay, okay, before I lose half my readers with the mention of the ‘e’ word, let’s throw in some facts – quick.

According to a recent market study by the ACCC, nearly 1.2 million new cars were sold in Australia in the past year. That’s an increase of 3.8 per cent compared to the previous year, and the highest ever annual number of new cars sold in Australia. There’s a lot of choice.

As I’ve said before, one of the reasons I write about motoring is because your choice of vehicle has an enormous impact on your life. That why I think – contrary to what most experts will tell you – your car-buying decision should be driven by emotion.

Which are Canberra’s most popular cars?

Recently, and in the lead-up to the ACT election, I wrote about the cars that are driven by our current and aspiring political leaders.

This led me to wonder – what about the rest of us?

Before reading on, would you like to hazard a guess at the ACT’s most popular vehicles?

There have been a few articles in the past about the most popular cars in Canberra, but none recently. So I got in touch with the ACT Government team to get the latest stats.

Australia's most annoying driving habits?

If only everyone else out there could drive as well as – obviously – the readers and writers of Practical Motoring, wonders Jane Speechley.

I love to drive (no surprise there) and as a result, I usually find I’m content enough when behind the wheel to tolerate most of the bad behaviour out there. Unless someone’s doing something really stupid and dangerous, they usually just get a ‘tsk tsk’ and pursed-lips, shake-of-the-head from me.

But yesterday, as I hit the brakes to avoid a driver who swung out left in front of me in order to turn right, I got to thinking. What are the driving habits that annoy us the most? I’ll start us off.

DIY or valet car wash – which is best?

With all the rain we’ve been experiencing recently, plus the warmer weather naturally leading us toward more road trips, many are facing that seasonal dilemma – what’s the best way to keep your car clean?

If you’re lucky enough to have all the equipment at home, plus the time and energy to maintain it, that’s great. However, that’s not always the most convenient option. Fortunately in Canberra, we’re a little spoilt for choice, with plenty of options for those who’d still like to get their hands dirty, as well as those who’d rather pay someone else to do it for them.
