Quick tips to maintain the value of your car
For many of us, our motor vehicle is the second greatest purchase we’ll make in our lives… here’s how to ensure you maintain the value of your car.
The interesting things is, we expect most of those other big financial commitments to pay off. We expect our homes to appreciate in value, and our education to pay off in other ways.
Not so with cars. For the most part, we actually expect to lose money on our cars.
For most of us, the cost of public transport would be less, so we’re paying for the comfort and convenience.
And we just hope to get enough time and use out of our car, before we inevitably lose it via sale or write-off.
Of course, there are a few ways to minimise your losses and ease the impact on your hip pocket.

Positive moves by Summernats with zero tolerance policy on harassment announced
Earlier this year, I wrote about going back to Summernats after a long absence, and later, about my experiences there.
I had a good time at the event, and tried to capture that in my story. The burnout zone, the Meguiar’s Pavilion and the Show ‘n’ Shine were among the highlights.

What's the best piece of car advice you've ever been given?
It was Oscar Wilde who wrote, “I always pass on good advice. It is the only thing to do with it. It is never of any use to oneself.”
My Mum has never driven (barring a few exciting years riding a scooter in her youth) so growing up, my Dad was the go-to guy for advice about cars and driving.
And he is a very trustworthy source, having spent most of his life as a professional driver – ambulances, Commonwealth cars, hire cars, taxis, you name it.
Like any true enthusiast, he can chart the milestones of his life by the vehicles he’s owned (I came along during the Triumph years), and his – very crowded – driveway is currently home to no fewer than three of his beloved Holden Statesmans.

What are Canberra’s most annoying driving habits?
Oooh, here we go …
Look, I think Canberra’s reputation for bad driving is undeserved (although there seems to be no shortage of people on my daily commute who are desperate to prove me wrong).
Sadly, the facts don’t back me up either. While we have one of the lowest road tolls in Australia – due in no small part to our smaller population – we have above average numbers of speeding and drink driving offences as well as more admissions to hospital for motor vehicle accidents.
And there’s even anecdotal evidence we pay higher insurance premiums as a result. Yikes.
So while I’d love to wax lyrical about all the ways in which Canberrans are skilled, courteous and safe drivers (and I’m sure many of us are) … isn’t it much more fun to talk about our bad driving habits?

Global Sisters is improving the lives of Canberra women
Given it’s International Women’s Day, and particularly given this year’s theme is to #BeBoldForChange, I wanted to talk about an incredible charity I’ve been involved with for a number of years now, that’s helping women get successful and sustainable businesses off the ground.
On IWD each year, and throughout the year, discussion often turns to how we can best help and support people in need, especially those living below the poverty line and marginalised (for a variety of reasons) from mainstream employment.
For these people, setting up their own small business is often a very viable solution. But for someone who has been rejected from employment time and time again … who may never have worked for any real length of time … for someone who is battling health issues, language barriers, or just struggling to find transport and affordable child care – can you imagine anything more terrifying?
